The Current Story of My Past
If you’ve ever wondered, “Um, but why?”–check out this interview about the inspiration and process of curating Throwback Diary. I don’t often get to elaborate how it all came about (more twisty-turvy than you may think…) Marion asks some great questions.
Diary 11 / 23-years-old / NYC
The last Antonio story brought up Donald Trump… this one brings up my father, and a certain Nazi dictator. Eh. What is it with this guy?? It’s the story of how we met. Be sure to watch January 20, 2005 to get the story of why we Never See One Another Again. This is a fun one.
TBDiary + The Moth
Last week I told a story at a Moth Storyslam here in NYC. The topic was “Lost and Found” and I talked about how reading my diaries has found the Truth behind the stories I’ve told so often. And I won! 🙂 If you don’t already listen to The Moth Podcast, check them out. The host: CJ Hunt, was pretty rad, too.
Diary 1 / 14-years-old / Reading, Ohio
I think petulant teen me would be really upset about my using a petulant-teen-voice for this entry… My parents want to move homes. I don’t want to. Stand-off. From my most favorite diary! Diary #1.
Diary 20 / 34-years-old / New York City
It’s strange how an entry only one year ago can feel so distant…
The summer after a pretty big life change, I go back to my therapist for the first time in a long while to check in. She teaches me about “Jackness,” and the ability to carry confidence. And I manage to *not* continuously text someone who’d been my first Ghost-er. #thisishowadultsdate? You can see me reminding myself “don’t write!” at the bottom of the previous day’s entry (albeit in Italian.) I had used the same method once for Alton–photographing the phrase and making it my phone’s wallpaper. It worked. 🙂
Diary 17 / 29-years-old / NYC
I return to my gyno-oncologist for my first post-surgery appointment, alone. She ends up cutting out scar tissue right there during the check. The terrific pain and vulnerability of going through that alone, and the idea that the health threat isn’t even over, brings back all the anger over Giovanni’s affair (see July 9, 2008.)
I say I get better love from the kittens… look at that fluff!
Diary 3 / 15-years-old / Reading, Ohio
Strange how the larger questions of our lives just kinda stick around… By the end of this entry I’m asking some pretty big questions for 15-yr-old me, and I can’t say they’ve changed much in the ensuing two decades! Also: my mom’s trying to hook me up with some waiter she had at a restaurant. Oh mom.
Click the links inside the video to watch the episodes about Eric and Tom, whom I mention through the first half of the entry.
